SECCA Project Update: III

Our SECCA project is looming ahead, in a good way, that is. There's going to be quite a bit of weaving involved, and the warp is all tied up. We're almost through our first yard (only ~19 to go?!?), which will be a sample on which we will attempt all manner of color wonders. Namely, your favorite dye lady and ours, Amy, will be rusting and using natural dyestuffs to bring on the hues. Here's a peak at the warp in all its braided glory. Our own dynamic duo, Shelley and Cayce, help feed the warp onto the loom (Gabe is there too, she's just hiding).

Moving In

at it again...

Member Shelley Smith is moving into a studio at Raleigh's Bonded Llama! We're going to be sharing the space while the SECCA project is in motion.

9am on a sunny Thursday morning and we're off to get Shelley's studio off right. Moving in....the start of something beautiful. Knitting machines, looms, and coffee, oh my!

The Common Seam flag flies again...

Shelley got her cinderella on scrubbing the floor (which perhaps had never been cleaned). Amy, Gabe and Meghan started up the loom while Cayce got her knitting machine up and running.

in collaboration with Janice Lancaster Larsen, and Kimathi

This group show, curated by Gene Felice, illustrated some of the core principals of analog / synth sound creation : ADSR, in homage to the late great Bob Moog.

Artist/dressmaker R. Brooke Priddy, Dancer/Choreographer Janice Lancaster Larsen, and Composer Kimathi have approached the ADSR envelope point of departure from an outsiders perspective. Through the creation of a earthen garment and the process of its gradual decay, we will see a figurative definition of the words, ATTACK, DECAY, SUSTAIN and RELEASE.

The earthen garment was displayed at the Asheville, NC Arts Council Gallery throughout the month of July, slowly decaying as pulsing speakers played low rumbling bass inside the skirts. On the evening of the closing event, Janice Lancaster Larsen donned the garment and brought about its decay through movement with live sound by Kimathi.

SparkCon, oh SparkCon.
You take about all of one year's efforts+energies and cram it into one weekend.
Insane;Incredible.
So some of us are gearing up for this Intense weekend in September, for some of us, it is 'again'.

Mostly fashionSpark, also some artSpark, some hair, some makeup, some significant support.
Keep an eye out here and there [sparkcon.com] to see our names popping up.

There is also an exciting kick-off event Aug.25 at Flanders Gallery in Raleigh's warehouse district.

well well.
The Out of Fashion exhibition at SECCA has been creeping up on us, in the best type of creepy ways.
There have been just a few (beautiful) samples happening, but mostly lots and lots of talking.
(Got to get that concept down....and of course, when you're considering little things like Fashion, the body, textiles, labour, image and identity, memory imbedded in objects etc., there's a lot to talk about.)

Here's a sneak at some sampling....the lovely Cayce had a time with some kozo papermaking/unmaking.

May Show! First Friday! Go!

In case you haven't heard, two CSC members will be exhibiting work for the month of May at Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh, NC.

Synapses is an exhibition highlighting contemporary art made from fibers*.

Opening this Friday, May6, with artist talks on May12.

SECCA Project Update: I

We (finally...) got around to having our first meeting to discuss our project for the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art today!
Many ideas were discussed over plenty of caffeine.... consumerism, moths, rust, technology, collaboration, and of course, textiles.
To quote some excerpts we found key in Out of Fashion's statement:
"...there is a movement amongst local artists and designers that turns instead to refuge, time and duration."
"...this exhibition mines the histories of fashion as vessels of time, nature, and memory."

Without saying too much, this project is already shaping up to be a really exciting opportunity for the Common Seam to unite creatively.

Many ideas abrewing, abrewing....more soon to come!!
